A new publication critically examines the proposed benefits of sea pens as sanctuaries for cetaceans. Despite the appealing narrative of improved welfare, the study underscores significant concerns:
Welfare Risks: Sea pens, though seemingly more natural, introduce stressors like fluctuating water quality, pathogens, noise pollution, which can negatively impact cetacean health.
Lack of Empirical Support: The envisioned welfare improvements are not backed by robust evidence, making the initiative experimental at best.
Operational Challenges: Managing these sanctuaries requires expertise and resources that may not be readily available, further risking animal welfare.
EAAM urges careful consideration before adopting an unverified solution, especially when initial attempts have failed to deliver on their promises. The welfare of cetaceans, like those from Marineland France, should not be jeopardized by uncertain and experimental approaches.
